UK commits £8.4bn to Dreadnought DP4, £2.5bn ring-fenced for supply chain

On 30 July 2026 Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced an £8.4 billion Delivery Phase 4 (DP4) award for the Royal Navy's four Dreadnought-class SSBNs, with the news landing across trade press in early August. Of the total, £5.9 billion goes directly to BAE Systems at Barrow-in-Furness for continued construction, integration and testing, while £2.5 billion is earmarked for long-lead items: nuclear propulsion (Rolls-Royce Submarines, Derby), missile compartment components, structural assemblies, electronics and specialist materials. The programme currently sustains around 47,000 jobs across more than 6,000 UK companies, with employment forecast to reach roughly 65,000 by 2030 and 22,000 apprenticeships by 2035. DP4 takes HMS Dreadnought through sea trials for early-2030s service and advances HMS Valiant, Warspite and King George VI. Commission and SpaceRISE sign IRIS² build order: 348 satellites, €15.6bn, 66 defence-dedicated birds

On 7 August 2026 the European Commission and the SpaceRISE consortium (SES, Eutelsat, Hispasat) signed the Rendezvous 1 implementation agreement, formally moving IRIS² from planning to full-scale deployment. The main constellation grows from 290 to 348 satellites: 330 in LEO and 18 in MEO, at a revised total programme cost of about €15.6 billion versus the €10.55 billion originally scoped. A dedicated 66-satellite LEO layer is added for defence, security and emergency services, built to a 'secure-by-design' standard including EuroQCI quantum key distribution. SES has committed €1.35 billion, Eutelsat €2.23 billion; Poland has pledged €656 million, Hungary €500 million, Spain €1.6 to €2 billion. First launch is targeted for 2029, with ESA as qualification and validation authority. For ventures in secure comms, QKD, ground segment, user terminals and space cyber, industrial work packages and tier-two subcontracts under the SpaceRISE primes are now the concrete sales motion.

NATO DIANA opens Mission Track with up to €300k top-up for five 2026 cohort firms

NATO DIANA's 2026 Challenge Programme, running since January, drew a record 3,680 submissions and selected 150 companies from 24 allied nations across ten challenge areas including contested EM environments, autonomy, energy, biotech and critical infrastructure. Phase I gives each participant €100,000 in contractual, non-dilutive funding, an assigned accelerator site from DIANA's 16-site network, and access to more than 200 test centres. The follow-on Mission Track, unveiled in June 2026 with the first five companies picked from the 2026 cohort, provides up to €300,000 (about $346,000) in additional funding over a five to seven month window focused on technology validation, operational refinement and adoption barriers. Combined with EDF SME coaching and the AGILE pilot's €115 million disruptive-tech envelope, the non-dilutive stack for a TRL 4+ dual-use startup is now material. For founders, sequence applications: DIANA Phase I for validation, Mission Track for end-user pull, then EDIP or national follow-on procurement.
