EDF draws record 612 proposals, EU plans procurement package, DECODER greenlit, defence-tech hits $7.4bn
The European Defence Fund attracted a record 612 proposals for its roughly 1 billion euro 2026 round, applications up 49% year on year. Brussels signalled a defence public procurement package for late November or early December, while the Council approved the DECODER counter-drone programme as an EDPCI. On the capital side, European defence-tech funding hit a record 7.4 billion dollars in 2026, and UK-Ukraine's Occam Industries raised 3.8 million euros for drone autonomy software.
European Defence Fund draws record 612 proposals for its roughly 1 billion euro 2026 call round
DG DEFIS announced on October 2, 2026 that EDF 2026 calls attracted a record 612 project proposals, the highest since the Fund launched in 2021, against an available envelope of 1.006 billion euros. Applications rose 49% versus last year, following a 38% jump from 2024 to 2025, with the September 29 deadline marking the first round open to Ukrainian applicants ahead of Ukraine's association. Half the budget targets major capabilities: a European endo-atmospheric interceptor, a next-generation main battle tank, a multiple rocket launcher, and a semi-autonomous naval vessel. A quarter goes to EUDIS, with around 60 million euros for disruptive technologies spanning quantum-secured networks, electronic warfare and multi-domain cloud. For founders: a 49% jump in applicants makes the 2026 round markedly more competitive, so those who missed the September 29 deadline should start building three-country consortia now and anchor to the 2027 cycle rather than treating EDF as fast cash.

European defence-tech funding hits record 7.4 billion dollars in 2026 as breakout rounds double
A Tech.eu analysis published October 5, 2026 reports European defence-tech reached a record 7.4 billion dollars in 2026, with investment nearly tripling year on year and defence-tech now accounting for 11.1% of European VC. Seven billion-dollar-plus rounds, Anduril, Helsing, Saronic, Shield AI, Quantum Systems, ICEYE and Castelion, make up more than 85% of this year's funding, but funding at the 15 million to 100 million dollar 'breakout' stage has doubled versus 2025 to a record level. Autonomous systems lead: European drone startups raised 4.7 billion dollars across 40 rounds, anti-drone companies 1.2 billion dollars, and maritime autonomous systems 796 million dollars. Germany raised 3.5 billion dollars, with Munich the leading hub. For ventures: the doubling of the 15 million to 100 million dollar band is the real early-stage signal, so a credible path from prototype to fielded, repeatable orders is now the gate to Series A and B money.
