The European Defence Fund received a record 612 proposals under its 2026 calls, with Ukraine eligible for the first time. Dealroom report puts European defencetech VC at record $7.4 billion, forecasts $10.5 billion full year
The 'State of Defence Tech 2026' report by Dealroom and Resilience Media, presented in London on Monday 5 October 2026, put European defencetech VC at a record $7.4 billion year-to-date, nearly three times the $2.6 billion raised across all of 2025, with a full-year forecast of $10.5 billion. Defencetech now represents 11.1% of European VC, up from 4% last year, rising to roughly 15% within the EU27. EU27 funding more than doubled from $2.2 billion to $5.4 billion, lifting the bloc's share to 21%. Mega-rounds account for more than 85% of European funding, with seven $1 billion-plus rounds across NATO including Anduril, Helsing and Quantum Systems. Drones and autonomous systems drew 74% of EU funding, and the US share of NATO funding fell to 75%, its lowest ever. For ventures: capital is abundant but concentrated, so early-stage founders should position around autonomy and drones where EU appetite is strongest.

European Defence Fund draws record 612 proposals to 2026 calls worth €1.006 billion
The European Defence Fund received a record 612 project proposals under its 2026 calls, the Commission announced on 2 October 2026, against an envelope of €1.006 billion (Commission decision figure EUR 1,005,978,500). Applications rose 49% versus last year, following a 38% increase from 2024 to 2025, with the single 2026 submission deadline falling on 29 September. For the first time, calls were open to Ukrainian applicants, ahead of Ukraine's EDF association agreement entering into force. Half the budget targets collaborative R&D on major capabilities including a European endo-atmospheric missile interceptor and a next-generation main battle tank, while a quarter, roughly €231 million under EUDIS in the 2026 Work Programme, is dedicated to disruptive technology. The Commission credited a simpler application process for the strong SME response; results are expected by March 2027. For founders: rising applicant volume means intensifying competition, so SMEs should prioritise consortium positioning and track the EUDIS quarter where single-entity entry points exist.
